PharmaBag is a tamper-evident, temperature-monitored over-packaging system that makes it possible to safely identify unused medicines that could one day be returned and reused — cutting NHS waste, cost, and carbon.
Every year, large volumes of NHS medicine go unused — not because patients misuse them, but because of treatment changes, side effects, or a change in care. Once dispensed, current rules mean that medicine can never be reused, even if it was never opened.
PharmaBag is a low-cost outer packaging system with a built-in temperature indicator and tamper-evident seal. It allows unused medicine to be returned in a way that shows, clearly and reliably, whether it has stayed sealed and been stored safely — the first step toward a future where genuinely unused medicine doesn't have to be thrown away.
Currently in development — prototype bags are being manufactured and validated.
Unavoidable waste. Even with careful prescribing, treatment often changes — due to side effects, a change in condition, or a patient no longer needing the medicine — leaving unused stock with nowhere to go.
No way back into use. Current regulations don't allow dispensed medicine to be reused, even when it's unopened and in date, because there's no reliable way to confirm how it's been stored.
Real environmental and financial cost. Manufacturing medicines is resource-intensive, and disposal isn't neutral either — unused medicine represents cost and carbon spent for nothing.
Missing evidence. Building a safe, trusted case for medicine reuse means first proving what's actually returned, in what condition, and how often — that's the gap PharmaBag is designed to fill.
